Baby Robin

The first young Robin of the year was seen on the 7th of May. It is difficult to say whether this one is the same individual or perhaps a second.

These photos were taken on the 17th and the bird looked confident to be out on its own There were no signs of its parents being nearby to feed it.

It is sporting the speckled brown of the juvenile plumage to protect it from its own kind. Any glimpse of a red breast will send the territorial male into a fit of rage, so the young robins do not develop the classic red until all the fuss dies down.

It is possible that this young bird will stay in the vicinity as they don't often move far from where they were hatched.
